Winding Down

WFF 2014 Steering Committee at Debrief

This summer was one for the history books.  We love our summers in the Northwest – blue skies, fun things to do, NO humidity.  But this summer was a-m-a-z-i-n-g.  I cannot remember any prior year where we had so much sunshine, but relatively few “hot” days (keep in mind if the thermometer is higher than 82 degrees, we Northwesterners melt).  And I think mid-September was the first weekend where I didn’t have the entire weekend booked!

One highlight was the Gig Harbor Wine and Food Festival.  Gorgeous day (the fabulous steering committee is shown above).  Fabulous wine from around the region.  Great bites featured by local restaurants.  And world renown chefs, Tom Douglas and Thierry Rautureau, visited with their team and gushed over how much they loved our little town.  I admit it….I was beaming with pride.

But that was just one of many such perfect days.  Enjoying Tuesday night concerts.  Organizing the Maritime Gig parade.  Hosting Golferitaville.  Kayaking on many serene evenings.  The list goes on.

I welcome Fall as a great time of year, but certainly with a bit of reluctance this year.  But I think we could use a little rain….

Design Ideas for Downtown Gig Harbor

Waterfront Sudio Logo
This past summer, students from the University of Washington Architecture School descended on downtown Gig Harbor for a Storefront Studio Project. The result of their several week project is a collection of design ideas for storefronts, parks, shopping districts, a year-round farmers’ market and the ever necessary parking. The sky was the limit, and the ideas range from simple exterior makeovers to re-purposing of current buildings and sites for new uses.

The Storefront Studio Project was sponsored by the Gig Harbor Downtown Alliance. They are hosting a public viewing of the plans on Tuesday, November 5th, from 5-6:30pm at the Harbor History Museum. Displays include aerial map views, individual renderings of suggested makeovers, as well as conceptual drawings of “what if’s”. On hand will be the students’ professor, Jim Nicholls, to answer any questions on the process or designs themselves. Copy of the program summary book will also be for sale ($20 donation).

This was a fun project both for the students who gained real life experience working with vested members of town, as well as the residents. Having a fresh set of eyes looking at our town resulted in some fabulous ideas. We know we have a great little place to call home, but a little imagination can make it even more special and vibrant. Stop by for a look.

Sneaking off….

Grand Cinema
One of my favorite things to do is watch movies….but not in the Cineplex, and not the big blockbusters. I love to watch really good movies at my favorite place, The Grand Cinema.

If I’m a good girl and get my work done early, I’ll sneak off to The Grand near the corner of Fawcett Ave and 6th St in Tacoma. I usually go alone. I usually pay a whooping $4.50 for admission. And I usually get a free bag of popcorn. Yup, I said free. As a member, you get some nice perks such as discounted ticket prices and a free bag of fresh popped corn topped with real butter. My son buys me a membership every year for Christmas. He knows how much I love going to movies, something he also enjoys. We rarely go together, but we do discuss films them afterward. Hey, modern communication!

Just in the past weeks I’ve seen James Gandolfini’s final film “Enough Said” (4 stars for middle agers); “Populaire” (fabulous French film about speed typing in the 1950′s); “The Butler” (you know this one); and Woody Allen’s latest “Blue Jasmine” (not a WA fan, but liked this very much). I told you….I see a LOT of movies.

So if you haven’t been to The Grand Cinema, give it a whirl. Check out today’s films at www.grandcinema.com.

Gotta get my work done so I can treat myself to the movies.
